DD Awareness 2018

In 1987, President Ronald Reagan made a public proclamation that the month of March should be recognized as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month to “increase public awareness of the needs and potential of Americans with developmental disabilities.” This year, the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD), the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) and the National Disability Rights Network (NDRN) have provided leadership for a national public campaign with a theme of See Me for Me! It is a challenge to all community members to look beyond the disability and recognize the talents and gifts that our fellow citizens with developmental disabilities have to contribute.

Quality Trust is kicking off the month with our “Better Together Reception” on March 8, 2018 at Lucky Strike DC – Gallery Place. The idea for our Better Together Reception was born eight years ago with the intent to create opportunities for people with and without disabilities to come together in community places to connect and celebrate. Since 2010 – we have been at a variety of exciting restaurant venues throughout DC and this year we are thrilled to be at Lucky Strike Gallery Place. This location is unique in that it not only gives us a chance to come together for celebration with good food and drink – but also to highlight the bowling talents of many of our friends and supporters with developmental disabilities.

This event also helps us to remember that it is important to celebrate our connection to each other as it is our relationships that bind us together and creates the strongest safety net for any of us who may be at risk in our community. Quality Trust is grateful for a strong community of advocates, families and professionals who are committed to the inclusion and success of people with developmental disabilities in DC. We are proud to call you partners.

A coalition of advocates will also come together at the end of the month for an official celebrate Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month on Tuesday, March 20, 4 – 6 pm at the Department on Disability Services, 250 E Street S.W. Washington, DC 20024, room 145. You can visit the DDS website for more information on this event. https://dds.dc.gov/event/march-2018-developmental-disabilities-awareness-month
