Legal Advocacy & Education

Quality Trust’s legal advocates work with people to help them get the supports and services they need to live full and meaningful lives in the places and ways they choose. Our work includes:

  • Helping people in cases seeking eligibility and access to Vocational Rehabilitation, Special Education, alternatives to guardianship, Developmental Disabilities services, Social Security, Medicaid and end-of-life planning.
  • Advocating for changes to laws, regulations, policies and practices to make sure they respect and protect the rights of people with disabilities.
  • Providing education, training and support on topics including education, employment, public benefits, finances and end-of-life planning.
  • Working with Quality Trust’s Jenny Hatch Justice Project, a legal, policy and research center dedicated to protecting the rights of people with disabilities to make their own decisions, free from overbroad or undue guardianship.

Our work has been covered by The Washington Post, CBS News, People Magazine, the Huffingto Post, MSNBC and numerous other outlets.

Roosevelt’s Success Story

Roosevelt is an adult with developmental disabilities who we helped gain control over his life. He had a guardian who physically abused him and did not let him do what he wanted to do or see who he wanted to see. Roosevelt wanted to make his own decisions and live without a guardian. He asked Quality Trust to help him.

Roosevelt told us he only needs help with complicated medical decisions. We helped him identify a friend who was willing to be his medical power of attorney and drafted a Power of Attorney form for him.

After Roosevelt signed the Power of Attorney, we represented him in court to remove his guardian. The Court agreed with Roosevelt and us that he did not need a guardian. Today Roosevelt makes his own decisions about things like where he lives, what he does, and how he spends his money.
