Family EMPOWERment Center
Quality Trust’s Family EMPOWERment Center (FEC)
is the District’s one-stop family support center
where families with a child or family member with a
developmental disability can receive support, guidance
and training they need to maneuver the District’s
government system for educational supports and other
resources.
Quality Trust family
navigators connect families with the supports and services
they need to ensure their families can stay together
and thrive, and serve as the family’s single point
of contact. Quality Trust staff offer a variety of practical
training for families on “When to the Call the
Doctor”, Disability 101, Self-Sufficiency 101,
and others which are critical to families who have many
barriers to getting the support they need.
Quality Trust has an accessible Resource Room with four state-of-the-art
adaptive computer workstations for use by people with
disabilities, with touch screens, speech recognition,
voice activation, voice to text and more. Users can
also access reference materials, on-line resources,
books, and more.
Quality Trust staff also host the District’s
only certified “Sibshop”. The SibShop workshops
foster opportunities for brothers and sisters of children
with disabilities to obtain peer support and education
within a recreational setting. Participants learn how
to cope with the many concerns of their sibling and
how to best support them and build their relationship.
Highlights:
- Supported over 350 families since its
inception and over 70 annually
- Identify strategies that will preserve and strengthen
families to remain
together
- Host an Annual Holiday giving program for families
who wouldn’t
otherwise be able to celebrate the holidays with their
families (contact the
Development Office for details).
Learn about how We Support the Jones
Family:
A family was referred to the FEC by the DC Department
of Health. The young family included dad, mom, and three
children; the family was underinsured and in a mountain
of debt following the premature birth of their youngest
child. QT’s family navigator visited the family
home within 24 hours and assisted the family with gathering
documents and applying for the DC Healthy Families program.
The family was approved within 10 days and the eligibility
was retroactive so that benefits could be applied to
the bulk of the family’s medical expenses. Dad,
who is also disabled, and the other children have also
benefited and now have complete medical and dental coverage.
