Two Programs Offer DC Residents Help With Getting Assistive Devices
Assistive Technology – Any device or system used to increase, maintain or improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities.
People with disabilities can obtain
assistive devices through the Assistive Technology Financial Loan Program. The program is a joint project of University Legal Services' Assistive Technology Program
(ULS/ATP) and City First Bank of DC. University Legal Services is the protection and advocacy agency for the District of Columbia. The financial loan program is an option
for DC residents who seek other funding for assistive technology devices and services, and is not meant to replace those sources that are legally obligated to pay for such devices and services. The loan program finances a wide variety of assistive devices, and can also be used to pay for equipment repair and maintenance. Loan terms are very flexible and payments are based on the applicant's income and capabilities. The program offers accessible services for applicants, including materials in alternative format. Contact Toni Tillman, Outreach Specialist for ULS/ATP at 202/547-0198 or Maria Mojica, Branch Manager for City First Bank of DC at 202/939-7600.
The DC Assistive Technology Resource Center (DCATRC) operates an Assistive Technology Equipment Lending Program. This program makes it possible for individuals with disabilities, their families, and service providers
to borrow assistive devices for short-term use, or to try out assistive devices before purchasing them. Staff are available to help you in your selection. For more information contact Debra Haydel at 202/589-0288.
